Sumeida's Song

World premiere of Mohammed Fairouz's opera (concert version), Sumeida's Song, with the Mimesis Ensemble. The opera is based on the classic Tawfiq El-Hakim play, Song of Death. As told by the great playwright, the opera follows the return of Alwan to his Upper Egyptian peasant village, and his attempts to bring modernity to darkness in an effort to break a never ending cycle of violence. I believe presenting this work in the midst of the current events in the Middle East is especially meaningful, and hope you will read more about the story on our website:
